Benicia's arts community centers on galleries, studios, and museums in the Arsenal complex and downtown First Street district, anchored by the Museum of History Benicia and Arts Benicia.
Benicia's arts institutions emerged from its waterfront character and historic Arsenal buildings. The Museum of History Benicia, housed in restored Arsenal structures, preserves California history and features the Arsenal Gallery alongside artist studios. Arts Benicia operates in the Commandant's Lane complex, presenting contemporary exhibitions and hosting interactive gallery experiences through the annual Benicia Arts Festival, which features the "Art Blooms" theme with more than a dozen participating galleries. The Benicia Theatre Group performs in the landmark BDES Hall, a 1915 building on West J Street.
The downtown First Street corridor contains independent galleries—Benicia Art Glass Gallery, First Street Art Galleries, Gallery 621, Happy Life Pottery, NY2CA Gallery, and Benicia Plein Air Gallery—where visitors encounter working artists, emerging work, and community-organized events. Open Studios, where Arsenal artists open their studios to the public, and Open Gallery Saturday, when multiple galleries coordinate simultaneous exhibitions, draw art enthusiasts throughout the year.
